St Lawrence’s Church, one of the Abbey Group of churches in the care of the Reverend Peter Green, is at the centre of the village of Thornton Curtis, on the A 1077 between Barrow and Wootton. It is of Church of England denomination. A spacious church, it is a grade 1 listed building which goes back to the 12th century, though some of the stones used in its construction date back to Anglo-Saxon times. It has a 13th-century chancel and tower with a peal of 5 bells. A particular feature is a rare 12th-century square black tournai marble font, thought to have come from the nearby Thornton Abbey at the time of the dissolution. The church’s picturesque style and rural setting makes it ideal for weddings and christenings, and as a venue for other events. Inside it has a full range of facilities.
